Your mala is so much more than a beautiful piece of jewelry. Whether you use it for its healing powers and energies or for meditation, your mala is sacred.
While mala beads have traditionally been used in prayer and meditation, anyone can adorn their bodies with these beautiful pieces. The most important thing is to believe in their power and allow yourself to trust in your mala’s energies.
How to hold mala prayer beads
Hold your mala in your right hand between your middle and thumb (avoid holding the mala between your index finger and thumb, as the index finger signifies the ego.)
Most people use mala beads during meditation to track mantras, the number of breaths, or to help focus during the meditation practice.
How to meditate with mala beads
While meditating on your mala, most people will use a mantra – a word or phrase which is repeated to assist in concentration. Your mantra can be something as simple as the word “love”, “om” or a sanskrit phrase such as “sat nam”, which translates to “truth is my name.”
While meditating with your mala, you will need to count your mantras or breaths. To do this, hold your mala in your hands and gently turn each bead between your thumb and your middle finger while repeating your mantra out loud or in your head.
Once you have made your way around the mala, counting your mantra or breaths on each bead (most malas have 108 beads – a sacred and traditional number), you will come to the guru bead. Your mala’s guru bead signifies time for reflection.
You can give thanks to your mala beads, reflect on your meditation practice, or sing yourself praises for slowing down and allowing yourself the time to practice the self-care act of meditation.
Practice self compassion
Meditation takes practice and patience, and as such, remember to show yourself kindness and forgiveness. Your mind will always wander, so it is important to allow yourself time to practice mindfulness – bringing your attention back to your mantra and your beads is key.
